Join the Deloitte Quantum Climate Challenge 2022!

Quantum.Link by Deloitte connects the industry to the leading edge of quantum computing, leveraging the immense potential of QC with regards to sustainability, climate change prevention and other aspects. This challenge created by Quantum.Link aims to combine Quantum Computing with the newest findings on the impact of air travel on the climate, specifically the non-CO₂ effects.

Air travel contributes with 5% to the anthropogenic (human made) climate change. Around 2.4 % of global CO₂ emissions arise from air travel. Further effects on the climate rise from the formation of contrails, the emission of NOₓ and water vapor and others. It was simulated by the DLR, that changing a single flight route to cross different territory can minimize these climate effects 25%.

Be part of this challenge starting on the 15ᵗʰ of February and concluding in a pitch event on the 20ᵗʰ of May in Berlin (Deloitte Greenhouse). in front our highly qualified expert jury. Work on this challenge as an individual or as part of a team.

Goal of this Challenge:
The Quantum Climate Challenge 2022 aims to analyze how the contribution of air travel to the anthropogenic (human made) climate change can be reduced by optimizing flight trajectories using quantum computing or hybrid solutions. The flight trajectories are optimized so that the total negative climate effect of the flights are minimal considering different climate effects depending on the fuel burn, the geographical location, altitude, weather conditions and timings. The challenge scenario includes multiple flights with various paths and schedules. Flight trajectories need to be planned in order to comply with all flight safety regulations while having a minimal effect on the climate. A problem motivation as well as a description of the constrains is given in this document. Use it to set up a quantum or hybrid algorithm for the optimization problem.

FAQs

Where do I get the additional data for the challenge?

The challenge data includes climate data as well as data on the flights. It will be made available upon successful registration.

What happens if I am in the finalists but can not attend the in person event in Berlin?

The in person pitch in front of the judges is a requirement to be eligible for the price money. Not being part of this events means you can not win this challenge

Can questions be posted after the Q&A sessions?

For fairness reasons no questions will be answered outside the official Q&A sessions.

What does the Quantum Climate Challenge 2022 involve?

For the challenge there is a detailed challenge description. After successful registration you will have access to the following additional data files: a file with the atmospheric data, data for all the flights with a time, start and end position and the airport locations.

What do I need to hand in as a solution?

TBD
